Weekly update, January 9
Winter roses in Carrboro

First week of the new year on the books and we're feeling...?

Online this week, we previewed fun art events coming up: tonight is 2nd Friday Art Walk with receptions at several galleries and a concert at Muse Gallery. And next week, we kick off live coverage of the Carrboro Film Festival with two interviews on WCOM 103.5. Monday, January 12 from 1 - 2pm, we'll talk to filmmakers Chris Baucom and Brielle Barozzini who made Rising Above Helene. Their film will officially kick off the festival with a screening at the Chelsea Theater on Weaver Dairy Road at 7pm on Monday. And then on Wednesday, January 14 from 1 - 2pm, we'll talk to D.L. Anderson and Sara Heilman (NC Warn) about The True Cost of Power, Duke Energy, and Carrboro's groundbreaking lawsuit against the power company.

On The Carrborean Radio Hour this week, we spoke with Will Dudenhausen of Dialogue in Support of Community about new year resolutions. You can find that recording on TCRH youtube channel. Next week, ctrl+alt+art returns with a conversation with local artist David Lyles. And the show is followed by The Carrborean's informal pop-up newsroom at Dingo Dog Brewing Company on Mondays this month from 5:10 or so until 6pm. Come by to say hello and tell us what's on your mind--stories you'd like to hear or tell in The Carrborean.

Carrboro Town Council is back in session. Michael Melton made a "highlights reel" of the January 6 meeting to bring you pertinent information while saving you time. Summary: The Carrboro Town Council welcomes a new poet laureate and planning director, recognizes National Mentoring Month, and celebrates a national award for its budget. Staff then walk the council through the town’s greenhouse gas inventory, acknowledge that Carrboro is unlikely to hit its 2030 reduction target (although it has made great strides to decrease emissions) and field questions about EV fleet upgrades, rooftop solar, and geothermal options for key buildings.

Other fun events coming up in the week ahead:

The next Repair Café is tomorrow, January 10 from 1 - 4pm at the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill. Staffed by expert volunteers, you can bring clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, appliances, toys, etc. to be repaired for free and the experts will work with you so you can make similar repairs for yourself in the future. You can register in advance here (not required but it helps them plan for the event).

And looking further ahead:

Carrboro Honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a Youth Poetry Exhibition. Middle and High School students can submit entries; the deadline is today (January 9)!

Information session on reducing utility bills from Home Repair Lab and OWASA: Tuesday, January 27 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Drakeford Library Complex, 203 S. Greensboro St. "This workshop will discuss easy ways you can save energy and water and how to get those bills under control.  Participants will leave this program with an understanding of how your home uses water and energy, low- to no-cost things you can do to save money on your utility bills, and helpful tips to get started on larger home projects." RSVP online. Free interpretation services: contact Laura Janway at ljanway@carrboronc.gov or (919) 918-7326 at least 48 hours in advance.

Orange County primary elections are coming up March 3. These primary elections are important; some offices (e.g., OC Register of Deeds and OC Sheriff) have contenders from a single party so the winner of the primary effectively wins the office. We'll bring you candidate profiles online and on air (WCOM 103.5) starting January 26. There is a "Candidate Meet and Greet" event at the Orange County Library main branch in Hillsborough January 28.

New locally-managed publication alert: Climate Gendered reports on "gendered impacts linked to issues like proliferating pollution and rising global temperatures" around the world, along with ideas that could make a difference. We'll try to get the co-founders on The Carrborean Radio Hour soon.

The Community Bulletin Board has announcements and giving opportunities and is updated weekly.
