Happy (2nd) Friday! Planning to view art in town this evening? We have your preview. Also online this week: in the wake of the shooting incident near Carrboro High School last month, a parent writes about safe gun storage. We also preview a local Mothers' Day weekend art show.

Congratulations to Eva Dooling and María Estorino who solved the crossword puzzle first this month!

Congratulations to Jasper Knight, homeschooled Carrboro resident,
who joined the Wake County Warriors this season and helped capture their first national championship at the HWSA Homeschool World Series in Auburndale, Florida last weekend. He played these positions: left-handed pitcher, first
baseman, and outfielder. He's a switch-hitter and plans to pursue both art and baseball in the coming years.

The Carrborean Radio Hour

We discussed Orange County's baseline food system assessment report with Jonathon Smith, County Extension Director, Dr. Mike Ortosky, Extension Agent for Community & Rural Development, and John Nicholson, local food system advocate and activist. Listen to the recording to learn what you can do to support our local food system. #1 action: reduce food waste.

Next week, we're talking about the Freight Train Blues Concert Series with Michelle Blume, Recreation Supervisor and Catherine Lazorko, Communication and Engagement Director for the Town of Carrboro. Tune in to WCOM 103.5 on Monday from 4-5pm for a preview of these concerts--one of our Town's signature events--or find the recording here later in the week. Elizabeth Cotten's Martin guitar will be presented to the Town of Carrboro at the first concert on May 15.

And after each radio show, join The Carrborean at a pop-up newsroom to discuss all things Carrboro and stories you'd like to see, hear, or write. This month, find us at Open Eye Cafe on Mondays from 5-6pm.

Remember our coverage of The True Cost of Power (on radio January 14 and in the February print edition)? NC Warn, which sponsored the film, has not given up persuading Gov. Stein to stop Duke Energy's "crimes against humanity." On May 6, they blocked the entrance to the Governor's mansion to read statements about Duke Energy's practices.

News from Schools, Town, and County

CHCCS posted the required study of "key data for the schools under consideration for possible closure (Ephesus, Glenwood and Seawell elementary schools)." We're still reviewing the Board meeting recording and will post those highlights soon. To comment on the report, the public is encouraged to bring comments to the May 21 Public Hearing.

Public hearings on the CHCCS budget: May 12 at 7pm in the Whitted Building (Hillsborough) and May 28 at 7pm in the Southern Human Services Center (Chapel Hill).

From Town: Have a wonderful weekend celebrating Mother's Day with all the beautiful Moms out there, and the women who are mentors and mother figures to someone special.

The apartment fire at 124 Fidelity Street on Monday afternoon displaced 20 people and killed Thomas Owens, Jr. We send heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. You can contribute to relief efforts for those displaced through the American Red Cross and Triangle Mutual Aid.

Chapel Hill Transit is revising routes. Take their survey to give your input (español).

The OC Board of Commissioners met May 5. Summary: The Orange County Board of Commissioners hears frontline paramedics warn about suspended step wage increases, reviews a recommended K–12 budget that raises per-pupil funding amid declining enrollment, and debates how much to increase the property tax rate. Commissioners also consider shifting federal HOME-ARP housing dollars away from new construction toward rental assistance and supportive services for residents exiting homelessness.
