This show is inspired by Jacques Derrida's quote from The Animal That Therefore I Am, “The animal looks at us, and we are naked before it. Thinking perhaps begins there.” He flips the Descartian idea of animal as biological machine into animal as the place where our own ability to think lies in our recognition that we not only look at the animal, but the animal also looks back at us.

Gray Griffin’s work is shaped by extensive travel and life across multiple cities. Her mixed media pieces capture vibrant urban landscapes through bold color and intricate line work, reflecting the energy and complexity of city life.

"These works explore mothers, mothering, and what it means to mother upon–in the sense that mother is both noun and verb, a moniker that is both specific and expansive." – Jameela F. Dallis, Ph. D., Curator
