Another first for Carrboro! Carrboro and Duke Energy made opening arguments this week in what NC Warn calls, "the first-ever climate deception lawsuit against an electric utility for damages inflicted by the corporation's campaign to delay the transition" to renewable sources of energy (New York Times advertisement, April 20, 2025). On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the Town of Carrboro sued Duke Energy Corp. "for the company’s decades-long role leading a nationwide climate deception scheme that has worsened the climate crisis, harmed the community and cost the town millions of dollars. The lawsuit seeks to hold Duke Energy accountable for the damages inflicted on Carrboro by the corporation’s campaign to delay the transition from planet-heating fossil fuels to renewable energy." Several outlets provided coverage of the opening arguments.
Last week, Mayor Foushee declared September 15 -21 “Diaper Need Awareness Week" in Carrboro, highlighting the need for diapers among struggling families and the work of the Diaper Bank of North Carolina, located in Hillsborough. The Bank has programs addressing diapers, menstrual products, and adult incontinence, among others. The Bank lists ways to support their work on their website.
Are you ready for the big weekend in town? The Carrboro Music Festival starts tomorrow! A note from the Town regarding weather: "Outdoor venues may be affected by inclement weather and could experience delays or stage cancellations. In the event of light rain, most outdoor stages may proceed as scheduled. However, heavy prolonged rain/ and or lightning will delay or cancel stages for the entirety of the day. A delayed stage does not push band times back but cancels the time slot. Otherwise, all bands will perform at scheduled times. You can also call our Weather Information Line at 919.918.7377 for updates."
This week, The Carrborean previewed three Carrboro-based bands: the Find Your Own Voice Singers, Slow Teeth, and The Carrborators, all with different styles showing there's something for everyone at this festival.
