Have you tuned in to our local radio station, WCOM 103.5? It recently celebrated 20 years on air and you can find the schedule of programs on their website. One program is “Vientos del Sur” (Winds of the South) which celebrated its 200th episode this week and is hosted by Rodrigo Tossi. The show's description states: “'South Winds'” is a Radio Show that combines music from Chile, South America and the world, with conversations in Spanish. We invite people from different countries who live and work in North Carolina, USA, and social organizations, to publicize their work, strategies and the ways in which the community can integrate and participate. We recognize the Spanish language as a territory, as a wide network of collaboration between people and communities, and as a powerful tool to express our thoughts and emotions in a world oriented towards production and individualism."

Speaking this week with Mr. Tossi, who trained as a community health psychologist, The Carrborean learned that he has hosted over 180 guests on the program with 17 shows hosted by and for children. His program airs on Tuesdays from 11am to 1pm.

Town Council met this week and adopted several proclamations and resolutions, including the Mayor's monarch pledge and a resolution recognizing reproductive rights as human rights. The Weatherhill Pointe neighborhood made a statement of thanks for town resources and volunteers that helped the neighborhood recover from Tropical Storm Chantal while recounting the devastation the neighborhood experienced and making town staff and Council aware of current investor practices in buying homes there.

There was a public hearing on the Downtown Area Plan during which Council heard an update on public engagement efforts for the Plan. Some residents and town advisory committee members believe that public engagement has been insufficient with neighborhoods both in and around downtown. They reported not learning about engagement opportunities or the Plan itself until recently and encouraged the Town to monitor future engagement with communities on this and other plans to ensure that residents all over town have the opportunity to engage. Other concerns voiced include a request to review the plan in light of what was experienced during Tropical Storm Chantal and evaluating how water would flow in a new downtown as well as traffic flow. Council agreed to extend the public comment period until November 18 (the next Council meeting). You can view this discussion between minutes 47 and 2:24 in the video.
