2nd Friday Art Walk Preview

The 2nd Friday Art Walk in Carrboro and Chapel Hill is this Friday, August 14. Many participating galleries host free public receptions with snacks and opportunities to meet the artists between 6pm and 9pm. The Carrborean free monthly print edition devotes its center pages, Gallery Place, to the monthly exhibits in Carrboro. Here are those previews for August, with most text and images provided by the galleries.

The ArtsCenter, 400 Roberson Street

5 Women, 5 Voices: In Form, Function, & Feminine Force. Alina Cochran / Irena Cepulyte / Theresa Arico / Tamara Buettner / Susan Brubaker Knapp. 

This exhibition brings together five women artists working across clay, mosaic, jewelry, and fiber art — disciplines rooted in tradition yet alive with innovation. Though each artist speaks through a different medium, they share a commitment to process, material, and meaning. 

Moriah LeFebvre 

While this exhibition showcases a wide variety of Moriah LeFebvre’s works, it largely centers around her Hometown (Inherited) series, which follows the dramatic evolution of Durham, NC, the artist’s hometown, from 2014 onward. 

Peel Gallery, 708 West Rosemary Street

Deere John 

Featuring Artists: Bill Fick, Jen Holcomb, Philip Lagas-Rivera, Sandra Ntube-Hernandez, Robby Poore, Mimi Stockton, Lincoln Sward, Matthew Tauch. 

Super G Print Lab is an anchor of the printmaking community in North Carolina. Founded by Bill Fick over a decade ago, the studio’s current iteration is cooperatively run by local artists and members - some of whom are a part of this exhibition at Peel Gallery this August. This exhibition is the Super G's artists' expression of love for its neighborhood in the best way they know how - printmaking. 

Muse Gallery, 201 East Main Street

Color and Curves: A Quilt Art Exhibition by Ellen Fisher. Immerse yourself in her delicate craftsmanship, as she uses bold color, movement, and nature motifs to create striking quilts. With over thirty years of production, the artwork features Ellen's dedication and skill within her craft. 

Drakeford Library Complex, 203 South Greensboro Street

Writers of the Boom / Ippy Patterson 

Writers of the Boom is a series of paintings by Ippy Patterson, known for her line work that ranges from the smallest pen nib to wide sticks of charcoal, from figurative to imaginary to abstract.

Carrboro Town Hall, 301 West Main Street

Swimming Horses Paintings by Scully Gustafson 

Swimming Horses is inspired by the Siouxsie and the Banshees song of the same name, which confronts patriarchal violence. Scully Gustafson is a painter and musician based in Carrboro. They paint daily and obsessively in an eternal loop of manic intuition that taps into the esoteric practice of art as a spiritual rite. 

Frank Gallery, 370 East Main Street

Second Annual Scapes Exhibit runs through August 15. Explore the definition of “Scapes” through different mediums and interpretations. This group exhibition highlights work by many member and guest artists. 

Also through August 15, The Featured Artists Exhibit includes the work of member artists Natalie Boorman and Nerys Levy, as well as FRANK Emerging Artist Lah Boh and the Youth Art Group. The Carrborean published a story on the Youth Group last month.

Lacey Lambe 

This collection brings together work created over the past year. While the pieces vary in style, they are united by bold color, abstract forms, and inspiration drawn from nature. Together, they reflect my ongoing exploration of shape, movement, and the beauty of the natural world.
