Weatherhill Pointe, Week 4

Volunteers converge to pick up trash and debris August 2

Weatherhill Pointe, Week 4
Trash bags with debris.

We had a blessedly cool morning in Weatherhill Pointe with a fine rain mist. About 40 volunteers came with rakes, shovels, and brooms, and the neighborhood HOA provided gloves, trash bags, and refreshments. We worked in zones on small, specific areas, removing glass shards, bottle caps, broken dishes, saturated drywall, nails, and other debris.

Here are some photos from the day after the flood and today. The in-between time included a lot of work from volunteers, residents, and Carrboro Public Works.

Most of the 48 impacted homes in this neighborhood will remain uninhabitable for the next 3 to 6 months. Affected residents are scattered throughout the area, in temporary rentals or staying with friends or neighbors.

A resident asked The Carrborean to share this message: "One of the houses in our neighborhood was a transitional home for women and kids. We’re in touch with a family who lived there, [a single mother and two children ages 14 and 10], and it seems like they fell between the cracks when it comes to institutional support, possibly because they aren’t considered homeowners or renters. As a result, they are still living in a hotel they cannot afford and are expected to pay for it out of their own pocket.
We tried putting them in touch with Social Services and the Red Cross, but so far, it doesn’t seem to have helped. We’ve been sending them some money ourselves, but what we can send is not enough. We’re going to keep trying to get them organized assistance, but in the meantime, seeing that they are in need of immediate help, we opened a GoFundMe for them:

Any donation you can make, small as it may be, would be of great and immediate help for this family. Thank you!"

Thank you to all of the volunteers and residents for coming together to support this clean-up! And thank you to the HOA for its impressive and indispensable leadership through the response and recovery phases of the disaster here.
