The Carrboro Music Festival is back for its 28th year!

The Town's site has all the info about the festival, parking, performance schedule, and a link to the app that will help you manage it all. The fun begins Saturday with an open mic session at Town Commons and workshops. On Sunday, performances begin at 1pm.

The Carrborean spoke to Justin Ellis, serving his fourth year as the coordinator for the Carrboro Music Festival. There were 286 applicants this year and a small committee selected 100 bands to perform. The committee tries to ensure a diverse representation of personnel and musical genre each year. Bands are paid a fee for participating and the town hires sound technicians to assist them. All performances are 45 minutes with 30 minutes in between to take down and set up at 20 venues across Carrboro. It’s a huge effort to create the schedule, liaise with performers (some of whom are in multiple bands), and coordinate with Town departments to ensure safety and minimize congestion throughout the event.

Ellis says, "Being able to help organize this beloved event is very cool and I'm so glad I can do it. If you see something in your community that you want to do or needs to be done, you can do it."

In the next few days, The Carrborean will post previews for three Carrboro-based bands. Stay tuned.
