Weekly update, February 13
Carolina Literacy, 309 West Weaver Street

Love is in the air...and there are many fun events (almost 40!) in Carrboro this weekend!

Online this week

We celebrate the arts with a story by Tim Meehan about Ouvert Open Decks DJ-ing (there's an event at Steel String tonight at 7), and a preview of 2nd Friday Art Walk (also tonight, from 6-9). And your crossword puzzle solution was posted.

The Carrborean Radio Hour on WCOM 103.5 (wcomfm.org)

We continued our coverage of competitive Orange County primary elections with a conversation with María Palmer, candidate for Orange County Board of Commissioners representing District 1 (which includes Carrboro). We also interviewed Penny Rich, candidate for Register of Deeds. John Rees of The Triangle Blog Blog joined us again in the studio for those interviews and you can find those recordings here.

Next week is busy! On Monday from 4-5, we'll have a conversation with Dr. Whitney Fry of Flame Tree Story who will talk about storytelling, the events that she curates in the region, and some of her favorite true stories. And then Tuesday from 1 - 2pm we'll talk to Jamezetta Bedford who's running for re-election for Orange County Board of Commissioners representing District 1. Wednesday (1-2pm), we'll talk to Sheriff Blackwood who's running for re-election. And Thursday (1-2pm), we'll talk to Adam Beeman who's running for the at-large seat on the Orange County Board of Commissioners. We will post both recordings and summaries of all interviews over the next week.

The Carrborean's pop-up newsroom is at Dingo Dog Brewing Company (410 North Greensboro Street) for the rest of this month, 5 - 6pm on Mondays. Come by to say "hi" and tell us what stories you'd like to hear or tell.

Health news from Orange County Health Department

Yesterday, the OC Health Department reported that a person infected with measles visited the Goodwill Store on Weaver Dairy Road in Chapel Hill on February 6 between 9am and 12pm. If you think you may have been exposed and have never been vaccinated against measles, please call 919-245-2400 to speak to a communicable disease nurse to assess your measles risk. A case was reported Wednesday in South Durham.

Measles is highly contagious and symptoms begin 1 - 3 weeks after exposure. Call your health care provider if you have symptoms: high fever, raised blotchy rash, red and watery eyes, among others. Good news--if you were born before 1957 or had the vaccine, you are considered immune. If you have a compromised immune system, work in a healthcare setting, or have questions about your immunity, you can assess your risk and find more information here.

Information from Town and County

Home Repair Lab and OWASA will host a workshop on ways to save energy and water to bring down your bills. Drakeford Building, 203 South Greensboro Street on March 5 from 6 - 7:30pm. RSVP here.

The Carrboro Music Festival performance applications will be accepted until April 30. The Festival will be held September 27!

Poetry Moment

This one is fun to recite. Especially in an Olde English accent.
