Sign at the No Kings rally in Carrboro, October 18

No Kings protests started in June 2025, as a response to Trump’s second term in office when elected as President of the United States of America in November 2024. This organization has gained global attention with other countries protesting in unison with the U.S. including the United Kingdom, Germany and France. Seven million people protested the current administration this past Saturday which made history as the second largest single day protest in the U.S.A.

Carrboro Town Commons, October 18

Trisha Lester, founder of Indivisible Orange County and one of the main organizers for Carrboro’s protest on Saturday said "The No Kings Day Rally in Carrboro was a huge success. At its largest point, we had 4,030 people – from all walks of life – and they were there to peacefully and joyfully exercise their 1st Amendment rights to demonstrate against what we know is an autocracy moving quickly into a dictatorship. The Trump administration has gone too far with its abuses of power and complete lack of accountability. The people are fighting for our democracy and for the non-billionaires."

These protests have ignited a nationwide fire, getting people excited for democracy. Local community members like Hannah Washington said “The turnout for it was honestly really impressive and people did seem really excited to be there. It  felt a bit like a pep rally to energize people more than anything and I do think people left feeling energized. I wasn't able to stay to see the speeches though but I know a couple people spoke. So I felt energized but don't know what the next steps should be.”

What are the next steps we can take? Start by knowing your local representatives for our upcoming election season. Be a neighbor to your next door neighbor and local community organizations. Support those in need during this holiday season.

Lastly, early voting has started in Orange County from today (October 23) to November 1st. It is time to use our collective voices and vote for what is best for our community and future democracy. There are no kings on this land. “Don’t boo, vote!” - President Obama
